If you look up “sample meal plan” you will find alot of sample plans that will help to lose fat. Most of the plans I found have 6 meals spaced 3 hours apart 7am, 10am, 1pm, 4pm, 7pm, and 10pm. The 10 pm meal is usually cottage cheese with a little sumtin else, reason being, dairy products, especially cottage cheese, are rich with a protein called casein. Casein is digested very slowly by the body, and the reason its usually the last meal is because it will help to protect your muscles overnight. Muscles?? Protection from what??? While you are sleeping, you are essentially fasting for close to 8 hours. During this time your body runs out of fuel(carbohydrates) and begins to breakdown muscle tissue to use as fuel and also to conserve energy (muscle uses a huge amount of energy, even at rest). You do not want to lose muscle, its the muscle that burns off the fat. A slow trickle of protein(casein from dairy) into your blood through most of the night willl prevent or lessen muscle loss. This is what happens when people drastically reduce their calories to lose “weight”, they lose muscle and water, hardly any fat, and when they eat again they gain even more fat and with less muscle it gets very difficult to lose the fat. Now when you wake up, it is recommended you eat within 15 minutes, because now you are awake and burning more fuel, hence tearing down more muscle, a good meal of protein to stop muscle breakdown and carbohydrates to fuel up is recommended.
I personally dont like cottage cheese unless its in a lasagna or casserole or sumtin, before bed I drink 250mls of fatfree skim milk and a 113gram serving of fatfree yogurt, that’s 140 calories and 0 calories from fat….12 grams of muscle saving protein….and vitamins to boot…..you will burn off 140 calories in less than 2 hours while sleeping…..good deal.
Cottage cheese is a great source of protein and calcium.
